No.5 Frederick's Place shortlisted in Brick Awards 2024!

We are excited to share the images of this recently completed Mercers’ Company archive building. Its windowless envelope is essential in providing the appropriate environment to safeguard the collection, although it is challenging in the context of a conservation area where the building is located. This challenge was an opportunity for an expressive textured façade. From afar, the building is a restrained and contextual addition to the Place. The monochrome brickwork façade provides a break in composition and a seamless transition between old and new. When approached closer the brick texture is revealed: inspired by the Mercers’ Company origins in the textile and silk trading, the textured brickwork is a ‘woven tapestry’ hanging on the façade. The Mercers’ Maiden is fitted above as a symbol for the archive. Selected bricks are projecting and thus emphasise the ‘warp’, while the recessed joints highlight the ‘weft’ in ‘woven’ brickwork draped to the ground. The texture is the most intense at the top of the ‘tapestry’ and disperses as it drops to the ground. Lifting the ‘tapestry’ at street level affords a portal to treasures beyond and the decorative ironwork of the fanlights signals the ledgers and rolls in which the history is captured.
