Barts Maternity Service, London
The complete remodelling of the Maternity and Neonatal unit at Whipps Cross Hospital aims to transform services for users of the facility and to provide additional capacity to allow the service to cope with the anticipated increase in birth rates over the next 10 years.
Following rationalisation of the spatial layout and a completely new interior design scheme, all departments involved - Women’s centre, antenatal clinic, birthing unit, labour ward, Special Care Baby Unit and postnatal ward - will offer light, airy spaces with warm, natural finishes creating a welcoming, homely ambience. The project involves building services upgrades and acoustic improvements, to ensure the resulting environment provides patients with a comfortable space in which to receive care.
Sonnemann Toon Architects were involved from early clinical planning through intricate phasing strategies, to piloting the scheme on site and we look forward to seeing its completion in 2020.
