St. Mungo's Hostel, London

The charity wanted to provide an environment that could support a particularly vulnerable client group: those with long-term health conditions being discharged from hospital. The aim was to continue their rehabilitation in a specialist hostel and to break the cycle of homelessness and re-hospitalisation.

The refurbishment and extension of a substantial Victorian property in the centre of London provided ‘step-down’ accommodation where healthcare needs could be assessed and treatment administered. Many residents have drugs and alcohol dependency problems and this can lead to aggressive behaviour and damage being inflicted on the internal fabric. The client needed the finishes and fittings specification to be durable but wished to create an environment where residents felt respected. A simple but smart hotel feel was developed and the visual impact of clinical fittings was minimised.

Residents were particularly appreciative of a new workshop where practical life skills could be learnt, opening up opportunities for future employment.
